AI Essentials: What Every Employee Needs to Know

AI is already inside the tools your team uses every day, and most people were never shown how it actually works. This course gives every employee the foundation: what AI and generative AI are, how a model produces its output, and where it is strong and where it fails. You will see how AI is used across departments, when to keep it out of a task, and how to spot hallucinations, bias, and red flags before they reach a customer. By the end, you will treat AI output as a draft to check, not an answer to trust.

Course Description

Most employees now use AI at work, and most were never shown how it works, what it gets wrong, or when to keep it out of a task. This course closes that gap in plain business language: no code and no math, just the working knowledge every person in the organization needs to use AI well and safely.

What you'll learn

  • What AI and generative AI are, how a model learns, and the input-to-output flow behind every tool
  • The six categories of AI tools you'll meet most often, and how to choose the right one for the job
  • Where AI is strong and where it falls short, and how to split work between AI and human judgment
  • How AI creates value in marketing, sales, finance, HR, service, and operations
  • The red-flag situations where AI should stay out, and the risks of over-reliance
  • How to recognize hallucinations and bias, fact-check claims, and treat every output as a draft, not truth

Answers to the most common questions about this course.

What is the AI Essentials: What Every Employee Needs to Know course?
AI Essentials: What Every Employee Needs to Know is a RiseCert online course that explains what AI and generative AI are, how AI is used at work, and how to evaluate AI output and use it responsibly. It includes 16 video lessons in three modules, about 1.5 hours of video, and a final exam.
Who should take an AI training course for employees?
Any employee who uses, or soon will use, AI tools at work: staff in marketing, sales, finance, HR, customer service, and operations, plus managers who want a shared baseline for their teams. AI Essentials is foundational, so it suits people new to AI as well as regular users who want sharper judgment about AI output.
Do I need technical or coding skills to take AI Essentials?
No. AI Essentials requires no math, coding, or technical background, and there is nothing to install. Every concept, from how models are trained to why AI invents details, is explained in plain business language with everyday workplace examples. If you can send a text message, you have the skills to use the AI tools it covers.
What is the difference between AI and generative AI?
Artificial intelligence is software that performs tasks associated with human intelligence, such as recognizing patterns, understanding language, and predicting from data. Generative AI is the kind that creates brand-new text, images, audio, or code by predicting what most likely comes next. A spam filter labels an email; a generative model writes one. AI Essentials covers both in Module 1.
What is an AI hallucination, and why does it happen?
An AI hallucination is when a model states something invented as if it were fact, such as a study that was never published, a precise but made-up figure, or a product setting that doesn't exist. It happens because models predict likely wording rather than verify facts. AI Essentials teaches the six shapes hallucinations take and quick habits to catch them.
How can employees fact-check AI-generated work?
AI Essentials teaches a three-step routine: isolate the load-bearing claims (numbers, dates, sources, names, policy detail, technical steps), confirm them at the original document, system, or site rather than asking the AI, then correct what's wrong and flag anything you couldn't confirm. The depth of each check matches the cost of being wrong.
When should you not use AI at work?
AI Essentials names six red-flag situations where AI should stay out: sensitive data, legal and compliance work, moments that need human empathy, final facts, original judgment, and decisions someone must own by name. It also teaches a ten-second safety check before you paste or publish: Is it sensitive? Can I verify it? Should a human do it?
What will I be able to do after completing the course?
After AI Essentials you'll be able to explain how AI models work, pick the right category of AI tool for a task, spot strong use cases, recognize when to keep AI out, catch hallucinations, bias, and other red flags, and fact-check what matters. Above all, you'll treat AI output as a draft you review and own, not a finished answer.
What topics are covered in each module?
Module 1, Introduction to AI & Generative AI, covers definitions, common tools, how models work, and limits. Module 2, How AI is Used in the Workplace, covers productivity, use cases, department applications, when not to use AI, and over-reliance. Module 3, Evaluating AI Outputs & Responsible AI Use, covers errors, hallucinations, fact-checking, bias, red flags, and treating AI as a draft.
Which AI tools does AI Essentials teach?
AI Essentials is vendor-neutral and doesn't require or endorse any specific product. Because new brand names appear constantly, it teaches six tool categories instead: chat assistants, writing helpers, image generators, meeting notetakers, research aids, and coding helpers. It also explains how assistant tools you review each time differ from automation tools that run on rules you set.
How is AI Essentials different from tool-specific or technical AI training?
Tool-specific training teaches one product's features, which change quickly. AI Essentials teaches judgment that applies to any AI tool: what AI can and can't do, which tasks to hand off, when to keep AI out, and how to check output for errors, hallucinations, and bias. It's a foundation for every employee, not a technical or developer course.
Is the course content current as AI tools keep changing?
Yes. AI Essentials is built around principles that hold as models and products change: how prediction-based AI works, why it gets things wrong, and how to verify and own its output. Rather than teaching specific brand-name tools that change constantly, it teaches tool categories and habits that stay relevant as new AI products reach the workplace.
How long does the course take to complete?
AI Essentials has about 1.5 hours of video across 16 short lessons in three modules, plus a final exam. Lessons run a few minutes each, so the course is easy to complete in a few sittings or one lesson at a time during a busy workweek.
Is AI Essentials online and self-paced?
Yes. AI Essentials is 100% online and self-paced, and your access does not expire. You can start, pause, and resume whenever you like on a computer, tablet, or phone with a modern web browser. There's nothing to install.
Is there a final exam?
Yes. AI Essentials ends with a 9-question multiple-choice final exam covering all three modules. You need a score of 80% to pass, and each attempt has a 30-minute time limit. The lessons also include short in-video knowledge checks so you can test your understanding as you go.
Do I get a certificate of completion?
Yes. After completing all 16 lessons and passing the final exam, you can download a RiseCert certificate of completion. It is a course completion certificate, not a license, professional certification, or continuing education (CE) certificate, and it documents that you finished foundational training in responsible workplace AI use.
Can I earn continuing education credit for this course?
No. AI Essentials is not currently approved or accredited for continuing education (CE, CPE, or CEU) credit by any state or licensing body. If you need credit hours for a license or professional designation, choose a course approved by your licensing body. This course is designed as foundational workplace AI training for every employee.
Is AI Essentials legal, HR, or compliance advice?
No. AI Essentials is educational content, not legal, HR, compliance, or professional advice, and it doesn't replace your organization's AI policy. It teaches general habits, such as protecting confidential data and keeping humans in charge of decisions about people. Always follow your employer's AI policy and consult qualified advisors about specific situations.
How much does AI Essentials cost, and can I enroll my team?
AI Essentials costs $99 per learner as a one-time purchase, with no subscription or recurring fees. To enroll a team, department, or whole organization, contact RiseCert through the Contact Us page at risecert.org.
